A new nonprofit called @spununderground has launched an ambitious effort to raise the profile of often invisible soil fungi, such as the larger, mushroom-forming ectomycorrhizal fungi that can build extensive networks through the ground. They provide plant roots with water and nutrients, especially nitrogen, and can help plants survive stressful conditions. Three kinds of ectomycorrhizal fungi found in Chile hint at the immense diversity of these organisms. Shown in order are Cortinarius lebre, Laccaria tetraspora, and Ramaria flava.
