Choosing love over hate can be so difficult. To feel is to be multidimensional, and feelings are constantly informing one another. Hate and love constantly dictate one another through who we love and why we choose to omit love. Hate, and anger, both valid when used to push back against what harms us. Love, and laughter, both powerful when used to enact joy in the face of adversity. I choose to defy transphobia and homophobia because I love myself, unconditionally. Because of the people in my life who love me, and only want to see me flourish. I wouldn’t be where I am if I was to let other’s perceptions and prescriptions of what I should be define who I am. I choose to resist hate because I am deserving of love. In this moment I will always look back and relish at this display of joy; we chose love in the face of our oppression.
