By the fall of 1973, we established ourselves within the heart of Soho 🙏 Due to an increase in rent at our original space in the Mercer Art Center, we moved into a new location where we would live for the next thirteen years: 59 Wooster Street (also noted as 484 Broome St). Multidisciplinary in nature, The Kitchen continued to serve micro-audiences and present generations of emerging and established artists, from Lucinda Childs, Philip Glass, and Laurie Spiegel to Bill T. Jones, Yasunao Tone, and Elizabeth Streb. It is also here on Wooster St where The Kitchen became a renowned place for historical firsts such as; the first concert by #TalkingHeads in 1975; the first performance of #PhilipGlass and #RobertWilson “Einstein on the Beach” in 1976; #RobertMapplethorpe first exhibition, titled “Pictures”, in 1977; #SherrieLevine first solo exhibition and the legendary downtown concert series “New Music, New York” in 1979; the first presentation of #CindySherman “Untitled Film Stills,” #JuliusEastman landmark “Crazy N****r,” and #LaurieAnderson ”United States Part II” in 1980; the pivotal exhibition “Pictures and Promises” organized by #BarbaraKruger in 1981; and #NamJunePaik “Good Morning, Mr. Orwell” and #AdrianPiper “Funk Lessons” in 1984, among so many other key moments for artists and for New York’s cultural landscape. By the mid-1980s, The Kitchen began again to think about its identity, growing presence, and the impact of its Soho space in an ever-evolving arts landscape, beginning the process of locating a new home. As Paula Cooper, a board member at the time said, “once it has a new space, The Kitchen will have a new future.” Follow the link in bio to explore the richness of our 1980’s archive!~ -- Images: 1) Black and white photo of The Kitchen on 59 Wooster St. Captured by Kathy Landman. 2) Dennis Oppenheim presented an installation at The Kitchen using his trademark of puppets and sophisticated technology // September 20, 1975 - October 4, 1975. 3) Bill T.
