Not only inspired by her wisdom and depth but also vibed hard on emo bachata and nostalgic Hatian boleros. From her words: I dedicate this mix to the memory of my loving grandmother, Andray Watkins. As a second generation Haitian-American, I have often felt that my ties to my grandmother’s country are distant. Although I was not raised speaking Creole or taking trips to Haiti, I have very fond childhood memories of my grandma’s love for Kompa music. Whether we were playing her favorite CDs while cooking in the kitchen, or she was humming a tune on our walk to the park, Kompa seemed to follow us everywhere we went. As I got older and her health began to decline, my appreciation for Kompa deepened as the genre brought much needed solace to my family. Apart from the presence of her relatives, Kompa was the only thing that truly relieved her pain during the final days of my grandma’s life. I hope this Haitian mix can bring you the peace and joy Kompa has gifted my family for generations. - Sumaya Nazar
