Three days. Hundreds of firefighters working on the frontlines. 50 hours of combined flying into the flames. This is what it took to tackle the latest fire in the Chyulu Hills.
Just a few days after a fire was lit on the northern slopes of the Chyulus, an arsonist was at it again. This time, wind fuelled the flames and rapidly magnified the challenge.
For three days, we worked alongside the community, KWS, Big Life, and MWCT. Teams worked on the frontlines day and night, using fire beaters and backpack water sprayers to battle the flames. Meanwhile, the SWT helicopter fitted with a Bambi Bucket doused the fire with water, while other SWT aircraft transported ground teams and equipment to the scene. An Air Tractor, funded by the Chyulu Carbon REDD+ Project, logged 20 hours of flight time conducting water drops.
At last, the fire was brought under control. It had taken a toll, burning through 9,344 acres, but the precious cloud forest of the Chyulus was unaffected. Nature is resilient, and this charred landscape will heal, just as it has before.
To see the scale of the fire from our pilot’s perspective, take a look at the last slide.
