We both wear true vintage 1920s, with elements of Egyptian inspired design: my velvet cape with offering figures (from @turnervintage) and John’s pharaoh’s head cuff-links (from @diehlmarcus, swipe for detail). The remarkable restored upholstery and re-creation of paintings that might have decorated a Victorian Egyptian revival room recall the furnishings and decoration of ancient Egyptian palaces, like the several that appear in the city of Akhet-Aten, the capitol of Akhenaten and Nefertiti. In EGYPT’S GOLDEN COUPLE, we set the scene of the royal couple walking through their palace on the way to the throne room, re-creating the events of Regnal Year 12, 3rd Month of Akhet, Day 20 (early November 1341 BCE): “Akhenaten and Nefertiti make their way rapidly to the throne room to begin their day’s work—the vizier has requested an immediate audience. Today they take particular notice of the cool plaster floor of the palace, their path marked by the painted images of bound enemies in a repeating pattern . . . With each step, the king and queen crush Egypt’s foreign foes, now bringing a gorgeously sandaled foot down on the back of a northern enemy, now on the back of a southern opponent, and frequently trampling the painted bows that represent the ancient enemies of Egypt. Beside these polychrome delineations of foreign perfidy are representations of the lush floral and ample faunal bounty of Aten’s creation. The paintings that surround them manifest the words of the Great Hymn to Aten: the cattle leaping, being content with their fodder, the birds flapping their wings in praise of Aten’s ka-spirit, the fish of the river delighting in his rays; even the enemies, once brought to heel, are the foreigners whose speech Aten has differentiated.”. . #egyptologists #ancientegypt #truevintagefashion #armorstinerhouse #1920sfashion #mensvintageclothing
