Ways we give others power over our life.

Have you ever had a bad interaction with someone and then spent hours, days, weeks just thinking about it, complaining about it, retelling the story, letting it affect your mood negatively? Sometimes I need a reminder that I’m in charge of my life and no one should have power over me. That means I’m responsible for my emotions, feelings and choices - not theirs. No one should be able to live in my mind rent free, hold the power to negatively impact me like that, and waste my time. Because at the end of the day, I only have control over myself, not them!

I used to spend so much time obsessing over bad interactions, feeling responsible for others emotions, feeling guilt, and not establishing healthy boundaries for myself around this. I realize that there is no positive outcome from doing this - in fact doing this was draining for me. I had two options in these situations - I could either change the situation or change how I respond to the situation. For me this meant revisiting and reevaluating my values and boundaries in order to take my power back.
