Even the most moving short films can be hell to make, but once in a very rare while a film comes along that is both an amazing piece of art and an unforgettable experience to create. CATALINA is such a film. It was a true joy to spend four days in paradise last summer shooting Tyler’s latest project. We went swimming before call, saw sea lions and dolphins, communed with the Catalina foxes that came into camp nightly, and slept in tents under the stars. We lost props in the surf, ran behind, cut scenes, added them back, and reshot them when the sun came out so we’d have options to match. I learned on the fly how to coordinate boat-to-boat shooting, I carried heavy shit up the same hill many times, I AD’d from a kayak (and wow, if I could always AD from a kayak I definitely would).
@tylerrabinowitz, your calm attitude and kindness makes for such lovely sets.
@orensofferdp, I am so endlessly impressed by how easily you find such perfect frames (and as an AD, thankful)
@jeremymtruong, @neimanmarcos, @luca.piccin, thanks for a properly rowdy and sarcastic channel 1
And @sammydigi, thanks for this script, this project, for being the reason this experience happened.
It’s a real blessing to be able to support such talent collaborators in such beautiful work. Catalina premieres at Outfest in a few weeks! If you’re in LA check it out, along with a few other films we produced at @rubbertape.
