This is one of the biggest problems when it comes to moms and mental health. We don’t have all the information. We don’t have the proper education and preparation before the baby comes. And when the baby comes, we know we are struggling and suffering, but we don’t know why. We don’t know what’s causing it. We assume it’s just “normal new mom feelings.” We don’t realize we are anxious or depressed because we don’t know these are common complications of pregnancy and birth. And they are actually the most common complications. We don’t know others feel the same way because we don’t talk to each other. Instead, we feel like failures. And we don’t want you to know. So rather than speaking out, we suffer in silence, ashamed and alone. And we don’t get the help we need for something that is both temporary and treatable with professional care. When someone said this to me, it was like a lightbulb went off. It was the most accurate, relatable description of what happened to me after I brought my baby home from the hospital. Mamas, can you relate? Did this happen to you? If it’s still happening to you, please speak up. Please reach out here. Help is out there. You don’t have to sit in your suffering. I promise this can get better.
