Did I have an amazing summer? I would say YES! I am blessed by having a beautiful family, incredible friends and a wonderful love partner in my life. I am also fortunate that I have work partners whom I am lucky to call my friends. And, lest we not forgot, I have a great team that I love and consider part of my family. Would I say my life is perfect and my summer flawless, NO! Like most people, I have perfect moments or even a perfect day. But rest assured, my life is not perfect. I am aware that my planet is not healthy nor perfect and this is all OUR fault. Please look at this video. It looks perfect but is not. All summer I was able to see the growth of the algae caused by global warming. Extreme heat is harming our oceans resulting in swaths of toxic algae that now blooms more frequently than ever before. This is happening everywhere in the Atlantic and also in the Caribbean. The excess nitrogen and phosphorus in our water is causing this record amount of algae overgrowth called algae blooms. Algae blooms consume oxygen and block sunlight from underwater plants. When the algae eventually dies, the oxygen in the water is consumed. The lack of oxygen makes it impossible for aquatic life to survive. Lately the largest dead zone in the United States is about 6,500 square miles and is located in the Gulf of Mexico. This occurs every summer as a result of nutrient pollution from the Mississippi River Basin. We need to act sooner than later and avoid this excess of nitrogen and phosphorus in our water caused by the runoff of nutrients from lanimal waste, fertilizers, and sewage from the land.
