True story. Last week I went down an Irene Cara rabbit hole. In my car. Trying to belt along with her like I used to. Yes, “Out Here On My Own” was my audition song in my teens and early 20s, like everyone else. Her voice was pure magic. It had heart and grit and soul and truth and depth in it. I got home and played that, “Fame” and “I Sing The Body Electric” all through my house and danced around, telling my younger brother @a_manthedj_ and our homey @mrfixit46 that I felt so sorry for them because they didn’t grow up with Fame and that voice as Coco Hernandez. I truly believe that I wouldn’t have had the example of the hard work and dedication it takes to be an artist without it, and it has shaped who I am. It inspired me to go to @baltschoolarts. I wanted to be her. And just like that, she’s gone. I’m gutted. Rest in peace, Queen Irene. Thank you for inspiring all us little Black girls,(and all us girls) in the 80s. We love you. ❤️
