Kū mai au he Hawai’i E hōʻihi, E mālama i nā kuleana E Maliu, E Maliu mai e Asking permission to enter, showing up with respect, and taking care of my responsibilities. To me this means... Anytime I harvest anything, I ask permission to enter the place, whether it be someone’s yard, forest, or other environment. Kū Mai Au is the first oli (chant) my Kumu taught when I started taking hula lessons. I do my best to understand if the population is healthy and plentiful, and asking stewards of the land about the most delicate way to harvest. Choosing farmers markets, growing my own, and seeking out foraging opportunities instead of supporting industrial agriculture that uses harmful chemicals, exploitative labor, and all the other problems created from consuming fruits from far away or that aren’t in season.
