I started demoing the new UAD ‘Hitsville’ EQ and it got me inspired to mess with dialing in some ‘Motown’ sounds. Recreating a drum sound is a lot like a comedian doing an impression...sometimes the key is to find a few details that really stand out and then lean into them. For me, this was about the tone of the drums, the saturation, and the lack of low end. While these drums don’t sound exactly like the recording, I think they sound natural within the track, and ultimately that’s what I’m going for when overdubbing drums.
