ON VIEW | The Mothership Connection by @zakove has landed in the @meatpackingny ! This piece is a monumental sculpture that merges African tradition, Caribbean heritage, and futuristic imagination. Rising to thirty feet, the work glows from within, transforming ancient forms into a beacon of diasporic storytelling.
The sculpture is crowned by a Mende mask, traditionally worn by women in Sierra Leone during sacred healing ceremonies. Recast in fiberglass and resin, it radiates ancestral strength while projecting toward new futures. Its neck, adorned with Cadillac lights, pays tribute to American funk and car culture, echoing the spirit of rhythm, nightlife, and urban invention. Etched into its body are Haitian vèvè symbols, evoking Caribbean spirituality and protective forces.
Anchoring the work is a base inspired by Mali’s Great Mosque of Djenné. The title recalls George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic’s iconic 1976 Mothership Connection album and stage spectacle, when Clinton descended in a spaceship to reimagine liberation through myth and performance. Ové channels that same Afrofuturist energy, linking music, memory, and monument.
