Handsome Dimitri has a smile for everyone, and we love seeing him. Dimitri came to us with primary bone cancer (osteosarcoma) affecting one of his forearms. At Fitzpatrick Referrals we provide a unique limb salvage option for dogs affected by this disease rather than full limb amputation, using an implant called a radius-ulna endoprosthesis (RU Fitz). Here’s a 3D CT scan of what this looks like. We believe that everyone should have all the options for their family friend and Dimitri’s wonderful mum wanted to save his leg, and give him the best chance of full quality of life. It is important to realise that dogs with osteosarcoma sadly have a short survival time even with chemotherapy due to metastatic spread of this aggressive cancer. However, I am pleased to say that Dimi is doing really well now eleven months later – running around and gulping down every bit of joy every single day.
