Hi everyone, we’re @rake.collective and we’re taking over the Spectrum account this week - thank you so much to Hazel & team for the invite! We’ll be sharing work and visual research artefacts from our ongoing project #PoliceState . The work, together with its title, is a provocation. It aims to agitate the viewer, calling into question the concealed deployment of powerful technologies and evolving mechanisms of control. . These are excerpts from police training manuals. The first image shows the ‘trauma chart’ as included in a police ‘Defensive Tactic Manual’; showing the primary, secondary and final target areas in green, yellow and red respectively. The figure acts as a bodily representation of the bureaucratic violence enacted upon it, endless papers, and procedures culminating in the categorisation and dehumanisation of an individual during a police encounter. The second and third images also come from police training manuals and are juxtaposed against the representation of the ‘subject’ in the first.
