In Seoul, we’re preparing for a new exhibition of paintings by McArthur Binion, opening September 1.
Binion’s second solo exhibition in Korea will feature new paintings from his ‘DNA’ and ‘Visual:Ear’ bodies of work. The artist’s autobiographical abstractions are made of minimalist grids that are layered over an “underconscious” of personal documents and photographs—like photocopies of his birth certificate, pages from his address book, or sheet music from ‘Brown Black X’, a composition by Pulitzer Prize-winning musician Henry Threadgill commissioned by the artist.
Binion’s work engages language, history, identity, color theory, and the modernist genres of minimalism and geometric abstraction in a way that is both intensely personal and dedicated to the rigorous history and process of painting.
🗓️ Mark your calendars: In celebration of Frieze Seoul and Hannam night, we invite you to join us at the gallery on Thursday, September 1, 5–9 PM for a reception with the artist, Korean barbecue, and live jazz music.
