In 2011, a powerful earthquake off Japan's northeastern coast triggered a tsunami that wiped out several coastal towns, killing around 16,000 people and causing a level seven nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Dangerous amounts of radioactive material were released into the environment forcing the evacuation of 160,000 people.
