There is a remarkable story behind this series of photos. Our Ithumba Keepers have come to recognise a cast of wild characters who frequently pass through. Many have become good friends to our orphans and ex-orphans. However, this particular mother and her baby were not among the usual suspects. The moment they arrived on the scene, a rude bull started to harass them. He relentlessly chased after the mother, causing her a lot of stress and frightening her baby. As soon as they understood the situation, Mutara's ex-orphan herd leapt into action. They surrounded the mother and baby, creating a safety wall with their bodies. Our Keepers took the opportunity to chase off the bull, so he could expend his energy in a less intrusive area. Elephants constantly astound us with their empathy, their bravery, and their solidarity. Although this mum was a stranger to Mutara's herd, they immediately banded around her.
