In the words of Dr. Taylor, environmental activism has typically been associated with a “hippie-looking white person, maybe wearing socks and sandals.”
Not only is this stereotype harmful, but it’s also incorrect. The start of the environmental justice movement can be traced back to 1982 in Warren County, North Carolina during which a group of Black people blocked the entrance to their local landfill to prevent hazardous waste from being dumped there.
Injustices such as this led Dr. Taylor to develop the “Principles of Environmental Justice.” Hear more from Taylor about the intersection between the environment and race via the link in our bio.
