One of the most beautiful things about new friendships is how expansive the experience is. It’s not just the person, although in this case both are treasures, but it’s the entire ecosystem that comes along with them. A day before meeting, not only does a new friend mean theoretically nothing to you, but their pains, joys, children, spouses, dreams, and battles mean nothing as well. And then, boom–a day, a week, a month, a year–at a certain point, drip by drip, their hopes become mine, their victories excite me, their losses tug at me. The struggles and accomplishments of their children take deep meaning in my heart. Their loved ones become my loved ones, without having to meet or vet them first. Before long I can see the World through their eyes. Nothing always holds the potential for everything. This is how it has been with my two brothers Cal and Eben.
