Mifepristone, the first drug taken in a medication abortion*, can now theoretically be dispensed at both brick-and-mortar and mail-order pharmacies. Previously, mifepristone had to be dispensed ONLY by clinics, doctors, or mail-order pharmacies (truly stupid and wildly unnecessary rules). It’s been known for years and proven over and over again that medication abortion is safe and effective, and in-person requirements are ridiculous and unnecessary barriers to abortion. In theory, people in states where abortion is legal will be able to get mifepristone more easily, provided pharmacists will carry it. Medication abortion still remains subject to bans and restrictions in many states. It’s a small win but we’ll take it today.
