In case you hadn’t heard or read this online: “The initial scenes (for “Blonde”) were shot in the same apartment where Marilyn, then called Norma Jeane Baker, had lived with her mentally ill mother. The death scene was also shot in the same room where the famed actress had died.” The death scene in “Blonde,” in which Armas ISN’T portraying Marilyn Monroe because it’s a fictional story, is filmed in Marilyn Monroe’s bedroom, the same room in which she died. This home was Marilyn’s safe space. The compound, surrounded by brick walls, is where she’d retreat to escape from Hollywood. It was her sanctuary, her hideaway. Shocking, exploitative, disrespectful, and macabre are just a few words that come to mind in reaction to learning this news. I’ve been in Marilyn’s bedroom on two separate occasions. It’s moving. It is compelling. To be in the same spot where she lived her final moments causes one to stop and remember her and all that she brought to the world. It’s hard to process the fact that someone would think that recreating Marilyn’s death scene in her actual bedroom was a good idea. It’s totally lacking in grace, courtesy, and honor, which Marilyn so deserves. Can this get any worse? Photo 1: Marilyn’s nightstand next to her bed, taken by the police as part of the investigation into her death. Photo 2: Marilyn’s bedroom, taken through the window that was broken by Dr. Ralph Greenson to gain access to her bedroom because her door was locked. Photo 3: Marilyn’s bedroom from my first visit in 2010. The room was occupied by a child, which I always thought Marilyn would have loved. The bookcase and dresser are on the wall where Marilyn’s nightstand and bed were positioned. (The door to the bedroom was relocated at some point in the past as part of the home’s remodeling.) Photos 4 and 5: Photos of Marilyn taken by Allan Grant in July 1962, inside the house, used in Life magazine on August 3. Photo 6: Entryway tiles into the home reading “Cursum Perficio.” Translated: “My journey ends here.” These tiles were present when Marilyn bought the house. (I took this photo myself.) #marilynmonroe
