Part 1 of 3: “The Family” Feature Film - Night Scenes. A big part of shooting a horror/thriller film is creating the right mood visually. One of the more technically challenging parts of "The Family" was our night scenes. Since the film was technically a period film (where electricity didn’t exist in the world of the film), we were largely reliant on "candlelight" and/or "moonlight". For our candle light, I did extensive tests to figure out how I could get a realistic-looking candlelight flicker from an LED source. Luckily by the time we shot our film, RGB pocket brick lights were getting widely manufactured and were becoming increasingly more popular. I tested nearly every RGB pocket brick light on the market for its candlelight effect, colour accuracy, and output. I landed on the Pixel G1 RGB lights. The downside to them was that they didn’t have app control, but still I felt they had a really great randomized feeling candlelight flicker, were affordable, battery-powered, and had excellent colour uniformity. I then customized a few small velcro attachable softboxes for them so that they could be sprinkled anywhere needed on set. We often used them in a pinch for foreground or background candle flicker or even as subtle fill on the talent from out of frame. In terms of moonlight, for our interiors I opted for a series of @aputure.lighting 300x's bouncing into muslin fabric with a full CTB gel which we graded to feel slightly more cyan. Shot on the Sony Venice in its 2nd base ISO setting at 2500 which really allowed me to shape our candlelight.
