Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct, Johannesburg “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” (Nelson Mandela) This guided visit at one of the most historic sites in Joburg took me to a different ZONE. No other site of incarceration has imprisoned the sheer number of world-renowned men and women as those held at Constitution Hill - South Africa. Including: Nelson Mandela. Mahatma Gandhi. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Joe Slovo. Albertina Sisulu. Fatima Meer. Now home to the seat of the South African Constitutional Court; and a heritage museum telling the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy. The museum also elevates art forms through creative programs often created by ex-prisoners. A thought provoking sculpture ‘Senzenina’ by artist Haroon Gunn-Salie @haroongunnsalie depicts seventeen life sized figures (representing the 2012 Marikana massacre). The sculpture has travelled globally from @newmuseum in New York, to @frieze.london and now back to Joburg. This visit reminded me how important it is to trace history in order to better understand the present. It seemed so relevant to represent by wearing my brother @halimflowers jacket piece.
