On Temple’s East Ridge, we had the guidebook description, a trip report, and a rough gps track to navigate. Neither of us had done it before so we were trying to move quickly and read the terrain but it’s easy to get suckered into easier looking terrain that’s off route, or just go the wrong way. So many times we had to read the description out loud to each other to confirm where we were going. A few things I’ve realized in mountain travels (especially on a long complex trade route like this):
1) read the description and keep it handy.
2) if it’s well travelled, don’t get suckered off route by the semi-travelled option. Stick to the well travelled choice!
3) if you’re on a low-5th class route and you’re facing 5.10+ climbing, you did something wrong! Don’t continue up hoping it will “rejoin”.
I tend to have a bit of a running dialogue going about routefinding which can be a bit annoying but if both partners are paying attention and participating, it’s pretty useful.
Ultimately we took about 10 hrs on Temple which we were fairly happy with for our first time. We used the rope a bunch when the terrain got more complex. Even though we probably could have solo’d it a tiny bit quicker, this was way better style for me on my first time.
