Over a year ago I connected with @pandey.akanksha from @verveindia to conceptualise a project around Auroville in South India. When I finally arrived in India earlier this year, a story developed covering locally made textiles and garments from a plethora of South Indian designers, highlighting the importance of sustainable practice in fashion and design.
“These creators of garments, textiles, weaves and embroideries, with strong ties to various parts of South India, have spent a significant part of their childhoods with nature, using their hands for farming or creating handicrafts while learning to connect with and protect the flora around them. A lifestyle that is emblematic of the region’s particular environmental consciousness has seeped into their work and designs; the local sustainable practices and ideas of community that were central to their upbringings or formative professional learnings are, today, intrinsic to the style philosophies and actual practices of their labels.” Text by Shirin Mehta.
These types of projects are why I became a travel photographer - scouting tirelessly by motorcycle through the forests of Auroville, expressing creative freedom with a gritty and hard-working team and exploring parts of the world with new friends I would never have imagined visiting.
Huge thanks to @pandey.akanksha and the @verveindia team for putting together this extensive project along with the rigorous help from our local team and models from Pondicherry and Auroville.
