‘I paint what I like’
Kalashnikovv Gallery, Joburg
The South African art narrative, particularly some of the home grown JOBURG talent is solid. One female artist standout is Muofhe Manavhela @muofhemanavhela and her sell-out group show at one of the best downtown galleries in JOBURG @kalashnikovvgallery
Muofhe’s vibrant work communicates the experience of a young black woman navigating the South African landscape. Everyday activities like dressing up and resting are communicated through her canvas. Her art also acts as a social commentary, exploring the positioning of black women in a society where they are often underestimated. Through art she is reconstructing the perception of black femmes. 👊🏽💃🏽
The other two artists showing - Lazi Mathebula @bombisa and Seth Pimentel @sethpimentelart also delve into themes such as heritage, indigenous history, mental health and life issues. The visual language is strong. Thank you to the Kalashnikovv team - Kirsten, MJ and especially Matthew for hand delivering ‘undoing’ to me (image 1). The simplicity of a woman relaxing on a bed is stunning. She’s now with me in London 💜
