A West Midlands DJ who has performed for Leonardo DiCaprio and Jason Statham spoke about ‘the bizarre situation’ after winning a Grammy. Hours before the award show, the DJ was in a California hospital after nearly losing his life. After performing at LA hotspot Delilah, Nav Pabbi was crossing the road when he was struck by a car. After landing on the driver’s windshield, the DJ went to ground with significant injuries and was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital. Nav performs under the name DJ Fricktion and was recognised for producing on Chris Brown’s 11:11 album. After the album won a Grammy for Best R&B album, Nav has spoken out about his ‘lucky escape’. He said: “I was quite dazed. As soon as the accident happened, I was taken in until the early hours of the morning. I had a lucky escape. Other than the injuries to my arms and knees, the pain came after the adrenaline wore off. “It was literally 12 hours later when I learnt I had won a Grammy. It’s wonderful but I wasn’t really able to celebrate because I was in so much pain. Most of my thoughts were about the pain and just being glad I was alive without any serious injuries. My entire body is quite sore to the point where I haven’t been able to leave my bed much for the past three days. “It’s been wonderful to get support from friends in the industry and family because it’s a bizarre situation. You have this high from such a situation in winning a Grammy but you have a polarising emotion of being hit by a car.” After spending his early years performing at nightclubs on Broad Street, Nav is known for DJing the Misfits Boxing events. But the DJ still has a lot of love for the Second City, and his beloved Aston Villa. He said: “Birmingham is one of my favourite cities in the world, I left the area to pursue music when I was 18. It’s my roots, my parents and family have lived here for many years. “I’m always going to be an Aston Villa fan and have fond memories of DJing on Broad Street. It’s been a wonderful journey to go from that to DJing in London and now a Grammy.”
