John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Lee Bouvier were married at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Newport, Rhode Island on this day in 1953. Harper's Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow made a special request for Toni Frissell to cover the Bouvier-Kennedy wedding because of Frissell's personal connections to the bride. Frissell made photographs of the reception, held at Hammersmith Farm, but once Snow learned that others had also photographed the event, she refused to publish the images. They did not come to the fore until much later, after Kennedy's death in 1963. Image: Toni Frissell Collection, Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.
