First of all thank you @itsjulai_ and @angeldevine_ for having me @_houseofdevine_ Leo Ball 🦁🤴 I can’t express how grateful I am for these people making my idea comes to life. @anniehuiii @femme.butch for this divine makeup and @dyan_tai for this gorgeous gorgeous head piece. You two truly made my fantasy came true. Thanks everyone who came to the ball or watched the livestream or in any other ways to support me. Special shout out to mother @karleemisi who checked on me before the ball. It all means a lot 🌙 This look is inspired from one of my favourite movie - “霸王别姬 Farewell My Concubine (1993)”. And this is a particular look from a role called 虞姬 (Consort Yu) in Beijing Opera played by 张国荣 (Leslie Cheung) in the movie. I channel myself with this look since this is a female character played by a male in this movie and this is a traditional opera originated from where I was born. (Also a coincidence this movie came out the year I was born) The movie tells the story of being an artist from the time before the Second Sino-Japanese War to Cultural Revolution. It also shows the transition of the main character played by Leslie. From his devotion to the art, his sexuality (which is debatable because he is living in the female role he played) to his destiny in such a special time in China. Leslie himself is a queer icon and truly an artist that I admire and respect so much. I hope more people would know him and watch this movie because it is absolutely worth it. I tried to do my best with the look, and I tried to live in that moment. I know that I still have a lot to improve but I would say that I have no regrets for every decision that I’ve made. I don’t find my culture related to the ballroom culture in particular but it is the representation that matter to me. I hope what I did on Saturday would not be interpreted as disrespectful to the ballroom culture in any kind and I hope everyone would love this look as much as I do. See you in the next ball :)
