Treating your kid in ways that support healthy social-emotional development is not ill-equipping them for dealing with people who don’t possess your skills. They will adapt. And they will recognize which adults they can trust and feel safe with and who they don’t. It is my goal to be a trusted adult, that she can trust with her big feelings, and future challenges and emotions. I have said this on numerous posts, You don’t need to replicate the oppression and harshness of the “real world” in your home, in order to prepare your child for it. Replicating it only normalizes it. And makes it more difficult for your child to recognize when they are being treating in unfair ways. In our home, we are creating the standard of treatment by which everyone else will be measured against.
