This is such a beautiful and important book for anytime, but I think it's particularly appropriate as folks start heading back to school.
PERFECTLY IMPERFECT MIRA is about a little girl who wants to be perfect at everything she tries. So much so that she is afraid to try anything at all. Everyone around her seems good at something and she's not sure she'll be able to figure out what she is good at. Then one day, Mira decides to try. And it doesn't quite turn out as she wants. So she tries again. And again. And she learns that the stumbles, wobbles and even big flops are part of a beautiful process of learning.
I love this book so so much. My own perspective of failing often and failing forward was deeply changed through years of work with design thinking in classrooms and schools. It's impacted how I live my life, how I parent, how I write. Everything. I have two littles who are sometimes afraid to try new things - one in particular wants things to be perfect and feels bad when he isn't. This book is perfect for all of us.
I love that this story teaches readers to embrace imperfection, failure and TRYING. Of loving the part of learning that is hard and stumbling and unsure. Faith Pray's simple words and sweet, whimsical illustrations show both the emotion and the movement in the story in such beautiful ways.
Lucky me, I have a book with Faith that is coming out next March and I'm obsessed with the art she created ONE DAY also. She's so talented! If you haven't seen her other book, THE STARKEEPER, you must check it out too! I will like her books in my bio.
