I just wanted to update you all on Dillans Scar and show you a clear picture of how it’s healed.
Are you ready for a Haematology lesson this morning? Let me explain just how bad this situation was.
First of all I’ll explain how the body heals from a wound like this. Your white blood cells are what generates new skin cells, they are what fights infection, they are what causes a cut to scab over.
Dillan was in the strongest phase of his chemo when he had his fungal infection. Because dillans cancer is in his white blood cells, the chemo’s job was to completely wipe out every single one of them, and build his body back up with blood transfusions when needed.
Dillans White Cells we’re at 0.00 when this happened. Nobody and I mean nobody wanted to cut this hole out in his chest. I remember a team of surgeons coming in and saying “we cannot cut a hole out that big in a child that has no white blood cells, it won’t heal, it will become septic and cause fatality. There has to be another way...
Well, there wasn’t. That was our only option of dillan surviving this, he was either going to die of the infection if it was left in, or die of an infection from the wound of what was left it sounded like.
I remember the feeling when they left, I was on my own, They wouldn’t let me have anyone with me, and it’s the first time I actually totally lost my composure in front of dillan. I was panicking badly.
It wasn’t until 1 lady surgeon came in, and I showed her what I found on Google of all places, that said this infection is the same black mould that grows on bread, cannot be treated with meds and HAS to be cut out, has a 6% survival rate.
Even then she said no no, this type of infection is inhaled through the sinus’s, I said “no! Look here I’ve found a study in America from a little boy with cancer who got the same infection from some medical tape! This is what it is-I know it!”
4 hours later it was cut out, and a surgeon actually got the train from Manchester of all places to come and do it! 🐝
...and my little Iron Man was left with this bravery badge. ❤️
