Swipe here or travel to my LinkedIn account to read it in full! “My introduction to Issa Rae’s content was my introduction to a universe in which a multi-hyphenate woman and creator of color could stand on the shoulders of her ancestors and other visionaries, rise from the ashes of Hollywood’s archaic shortcomings, and create... not just her own table but her own building. When I ‘discovered’ Issa, I knew that I was witnessing the evolution of a mastermind and revolutionary at work. While at Spelman College, I emphasized my desire to study and develop content representing myself, my peers, family members, and diasporic bodies alike on screen. Actualizing similar desires while prioritizing representation in the art mediums where she felt unseen, Issa, herself, became a representative and introduced new Black female character archetypes to an unfortunately limited list. And since her Hollywood debut, she has continued to open new doors for other artists to walk through. Thank you, Issa, for destigmatizing the layered artist, for normalizing FUBU creations, and for working so incredibly hard to tell stories with intention – and doing so with such poise, grace, and honesty.
