I spend the first 2 nights in a chain hotel until I get my bearings, then I move to a hostel or somewhere that I can get the best recommendations for things to see and do. 2. I always carry a Visa card with me. Not every country or place will take Amex. 3. I take my passport everywhere I go and put it under lock and key. I lock my backpack. It sucks because it can get heavy, but I’ve had random places like hotels I’ve bought day passes at require me to show my passport. 4. I always fill out the SMART traveler info on the US State dept website.
