“Astrapia” / Throughout human history, we have found ways to celebrate our unique cultures, traditions, and communities. In the shadow of Mount Hagen in Papua New Guinea, the annual sing-sing festival aims to do just that. From intricate headpieces made of ferns and feathers to handmade masks depicting the spirits, the material traditions from nearly 100 tribes filled the valley. Through the crowd, this young woman caught my eye. The intricacy and detail in her regalia must have taken hours to assemble, and she beamed with pride to be able to represent her culture in this way. ‘Astrapia’ was one of the first photos I ever took and remains one of my favorites- so much so that it hangs in my living room for a splash of vibrance and a silent reminder of how far I have come in my art.
