Views from a playful Lobo . Whereas sometimes a Sea Lion’s charge can be an aggressive, threatening behavior, this particular Sea Lion was a member of a group of five who were out in the blue playing with each other. We were out looking for baitballs when we came across a few small groups of these guys. We hopped in to see what they were up to and they quickly swarmed us and let us join in on their fun doing underwater acrobatics, blowing bubbles, and posing for some snaps. . It was clear that rather than seeing us as a threat, which they might have had they been working a baitball up from the deep to the surface where they could hunt much more successfully, instead they simply saw us as more dive buddies. As I watched them, I couldn’t help but notice that every time they would do one of these quick bursts of energy while close to the surface, they would flip upside down. This allowed them to take a quick breath of air while also keeping their eyes below the surface of the water, locked onto us. Here’s the view from that perspective.
