At the end of last year, I was burnt out. Taking this last month away from social media to focus on rest, exercise, eating healthy, organizing and doing nothing for pleasure has recharged me to a level that I haven’t been at in years. Because of that, now feels like the right to to reveal my ongoing personal project: The Black Male Form. The Black Male Form is a phrase that I’ve used for most of my career to describe my work and it’s been synonymous with the type of work that I was known for making. I say “was” b/c people don’t associate me with shooting Black men anymore. Or men in general for that matter. It sucks b/c that was a big part of my identity as a photographer and unfortunately I rarely get hired to shoot men. It feels good to go back to my roots and to push even further than I have before in terms of abstraction, framing, and creativity. To shoot for fun, often with no other goal than to create images that please me. I’ve officially been working on this project for two years, and unofficially for almost 10 years - starting the first week that I moved to New York. I chose to reveal this image first, of @septumpapi - who is an unparalleled muse. Every time we create together, my work leaps forward. Our work for The Black Male Form is no exception.
