“Believe it or not, the finale dress design was something that came to us in the last moment. We had another green dress originally planned for the Toronto finale show but both Rupi and I decided that it didn’t feel “finale” enough. I always envisioned the finale dress to be the Cinderella Blue Colour that we made it in since it’s my favourite colour! Rupi wanted drama and something big, so we both came up with a design that catered to both our visions in November. We both agreed that we loved the corsette bustier silhouette on her, since she had done it for a couple of her shows already. But, we decided to bedazzle it. The train and ruffles was a must to make it as dramatic as possible. The gloves were a last minute decision I came up with because the dress, although dramatic, still felt bare. We sewed up the gloves with the intention of cutting off the excess ruffle but I loved how the ruffles on the gloves added a wing like effect which was part of the original design. Due to some logistic problems, the team wasn’t able to start this dress until the last week of November, giving us only 2-3 weeks to complete this number. We went back and forth with the design with Rupi virtually since she was still on tour. Over 100 m of tulle was used to create the dramatic train and all the ruffle details. I hadn’t done much sewing during my pregnancy but this dress was one where I was required to help out in the ruffling process on one of the few days I went in during my self-proclaimed “maternity leave”. The day I was supposed to go in to do the final quality check, I went into labour !!! And I literally remember approving the design over WhatsApp and giving it the final “it’s ready for quality check” stamp.
