Born to an English family in Dublin on 28 October 1909, Francis Bacon was the second of five children. He spent his childhood at Cannycourt, County Kildare. In 1927 Bacon travelled to Berlin and, inspired by the work of Picasso, began to draw and paint. Returning to London in the following year, he settled in South Kensington.
Later in 1959, Francis Bacon spent four months painting in St Ives. He was based at No.3 Porthmeor Studio, alongside Terry Frost and Patrick Heron.
