nation-states are violent social constructs with materially devastating consequences—and are a fairly recent ideological innovation. the nation-state cultivates + imposes a monoculture known as “nationalism” that instrumentalizes the border to reproduce this monoculture to exclude all other cultural forms + to invisiblize the violence it takes to maintain this project of alleged self-determined sovereignty. And now the stakes are + will hyper-intensify, as the heavy investment (most notably by global north nations) in a fossil fuel industry + militarized resource extraction economy accelerates climate change, thus making movement away from climate-warming-induced havoc imperative. there are likely much more stories like the San Antonio and Melilla migrant massacres that have been hidden in the shadows. And there will be more. The migrant, the vagrant, the mover, the displaced, the nomad, the unhoused, the refugee, the unsettled + un-settler is one of the greatest subversions of the nation-state formation. and why therefore, the migrant, rendering the border as porous + national identity as unstable, is understood as a problem. But, we could radically transform our imagination, and thus the trajectory of generations of offsprings, and center the migrant in the way we design new futures. when we talk about abolition + decoloniality, we are invoking an imaginary (that we organize to enact as reality) where travel through a mama earth free of borders is actually what can + will protect her + us. الحركة بركة slide 1: me slides 2-4 @harshawalia8 —read their book “Border & Rule” (2021) via @haymarketbooks slide 5: @decolonialatlas #decolonize #decoloniality #borderless #noborders #climatechange #futurism #climate #climatecrisis #migration #migrants #climaterefugees #mamaearth #abolition #necropolitics
