Today I fell in love again - this time with Ms Lorna - a 70 and something year old beauty who is determined to take the sea moss industry by storm with a brand called YAYACANOE which was the brainchild of her mother - a photo of whom takes place of pride on the logo for the packaging. Lorna greets me and tells me I have seductive eyes - she is a true charmer and a shrewd businesswoman. She has 200 lbs of dried sea moss that she is putting all her energy into selling. Sea moss harvesting is tough work, a lot of sweat and toil and one only hopes that there is no bad weather as they can break off the lines and wash away. Small bits of sea moss are planted approx 2 feet apart for a 2 month period when it should be ready for harvesting. Sea moss is the new super food which contains 92 out of the 102 minerals and vitamins naturally found in the human body. As a parting gift, Lorna gives me some raw sea moss that she’s just picked - I taste it and close my eyes to savor that fresh, salty taste that pervades my senses and I listen to the sharp crunch as the sea moss gets mangled between my teeth.
