Week 1: Editing my story beats, hooks and “save the cat” outlines.
In working with @newdegreepress and @georgetownuniversity I have the privilege of maintaining 100% ownership of my book while having access to copy editors, marketing revision editors, etc.
It’s a bit overwhelming but today’s session gave me the confidence I needed to move forward. The part that brought the most anxiety was explaining how my neurodivergent mind recieves feedback and instruction.
To a neurotypical person you may hear “you just need to change this one thing this week.” My mind interprets this in the following way, “Change that one thing but be sure to change everything that could be overtly or covertly connected to that one thing, today, all at the same time, right now.”
Feeling comfortable enough to share that insight with my editor and having her recieve it with so much enthusiasm and grace was a relief.
She has offered to switch her style of feedback to accommodate my style of information processing. After years of experiencing environments where my intelligence, style of communication and information processing was used as a constant source of disparagement masked as humor, this is a breath of fresh air.
I feel seen :)
Comment below and share a moment where you’ve felt understood and accepted in a professional work setting. We all need good news now more than ever.
