A team of Ukrainian volunteers say that, since the Russian retreat, they have picked up three hundred corpses in Bucha, Ukraine. A dispatch for @newyorkermag with a story by Luke Mogelson.
Mogelson reports from Bucha, where a mother recovered her son’s barely recognizable corpse, which had all the fingers on one hand wrenched backward, weeks after he was detained by Russian soldiers; where two elderly sisters were murdered in their home; where three mass graves have been dug behind the church; where a pile of mutilated bodies was burned beside a garbage pile. A local volunteer told Mogelson that he and his team had picked up about 300 corpses, approximately 100 of which had their hands tied behind their backs, since Russia’s retreat. When asked where he’d encountered such cases, the volunteer replied, “Everywhere.” At the link in our bio, Mogelson writes about the aftermath of the Russian occupation in a Ukrainian town.
