I was so honored to be a part of @karliekloss most recent @adidaswomen campaign and I think it’s truly so funny how it still ties back to @sani. ✨
We started Sani to make shopping for Indian weddings easier. 💍 What we didn’t realize was that starting this business would allow us to connect with our culture in a deeper way and make us want to see it well represented in the mainstream. Growing up, we never saw ourselves in mainstream media, and in our efforts to conform to what we did see, we missed a lot of opportunities to explore our Indian background. We’ve been excited to see more and more representation, especially over the past few years.🥻
Even then, when this collaboration happened I was shocked that they wanted ME to model with Karlie for an athletic brand. I’m a 5’3 Indian girl from a small town where whiteness was the ideal standard of beauty. 🏡There’ve been plenty of days when I’ve wanted to look like everything that I am not. 🤷🏽♀️
Lack of representation has led a lot of us to not even imagine we can do a lot of things. Seeing my dad start a business with his six brothers and sisters allowed me to have the confidence to start my entrepreneurial journey with @nikishamdasani. I needed to see it to believe it could happen for me. 🤍
And then getting to do this stretched the bounds of what I’ve dreamed of. I hope everyone gets a chance to experience that - through opportunities like this, by seeing themselves in movies, tv shows, etc, and by having a support system that pushes you and tells you that you belong. Thank you to @karliekloss for making this happen and for inspiring and believing in me. 💫
