Part 1: Lake Houses⁠ Waking up at the quintessentially beautiful upstate lake house and all I can think is, "where the fuck am I going to work from?" Plenty of places to sit, drink coasters at every table and prime real estate dedicated to the pool table by the window, but no desks. With remote work now embraced by most, our expectation is to be able to work from anywhere, which is starting to feel like relax from nowhere. ⁠ ⁠ As the lake house mocked my feeble attempt to do what was clearly never a part of its intended purpose, I decided to take a last minute personal day, grabbed a coffee and jumped into the modestly perfect 25-year-old Ski Nautique for a morning cruise. Brant Lake is about an hour north of Saratoga Springs in upstate New York. Much like the lake house, it doesn't care about my work day. It's singular focus is to provide a sense of calm and relaxation and as far as one-trick ponies go, its fucking brilliant.⁠ ⁠ While versatility can be a beautiful thing, the jack of all trades is also the master of none. Blurring the lines between work and play via remote work just dilutes your ability to do both. Can you work from anywhere? Yes. Should you? No. Some places should only exist for the purpose of relaxation, never to be tainted by the stressors of work.⁠ The lake house may accommodate a long to-do list filled with things like sleeping in, waterskiing and multiple naps but work isn’t something that should ever be on that list. ⁠ We close out the day with a sunset slalom ski session on the glassy lake. The Ski Nautique provides enough room for one spectator, minimizing weight and ensuring the ideal wake for the skier - something this vintage boat does better than some it's more modern competition.
