Yesterday I failed at something that I really wanted to do, but at least in that failure I see improvement.
I wanted to do the Squamish 50 mile course as a solo run in the mountains for a day. I screwed up a lot in terms of nutrition both the day before and while running, and didn’t pace properly, and so at mile 27 started feeling really queasy, and by mile 31 started vomiting from mild heat stroke and my body started shutting down. I tried to push through but the last 3 miles getting to mile 36 was terrible. I was having to take breaks every few feet, fighting not to fall asleep when I sat down. Couldn’t get any food in and couldn’t even keep water down. Luckily @douglasarmstrong decided to do a section with me and when I was rolling up on that last bit after he was nice enough to come pick me up when he got to his car. It was the most I’ve ever had my body fail me.
However in doing so I noticed that compared to a 30 mile run I did last year which is what made me want to do this one, I was in much better shape. I went further and had a much higher climb on this run and my legs and muscles felt so much better this time. My strength and endurance have both increased greatly from it and overall I am happy I tried, though obviously it is disappointing to miss the mark you wanted 🤷🏻♂️
