Here are some pictures from the New Bedford Whaling Museum. A few years ago I read Moby Dick and it started off a huge fascination with the whaling life of the 1800s. The skeleton shown here is that same species: a Sperm Whale, which is the largest type of whale with teeth. 170 years ago (not really that long ago), electricity hadn’t been harnessed as a power source yet, so the world’s major cities were lit by lamps fueled by whale oil. Men would go on insanely dangerous year-long journeys around the world, risking their lives to harvest as much of this oil as possible. It’s an incredible subject to read about, and it goes without saying that whales are beautiful animals to study. I would highly recommend this museum if you’re ever in Massachusetts! 👍🏻🐋
