The machine programming has been re-adapted from original late 80s codes and knitted in Milano on “vintage” flat knitting machines.
Our main visual reference were the drawings and artworks of architect Peter Cook.
Cook’s practice, in particular his post-Archigram body of work, envisioned the arrival of a new cultural sphere that would be the “outcome of the collision, peaceful coexistence, fusion, and interchange of pluralistic and diverse cultural value systems.” (Kisho Kurokawa, Competition announcement “Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition,” The Japan Architect, February 1980).
Along the main architectural theme, we drew inspiration from the science-fiction book “Il grande ritratto” by Dino Buzzati (1960), in particular the author’s poetic and visionary description of a proto AI designed and built in the form of a vast, human-resembling mechanical architecture.
Each Jacquard was inspired by a different passage of Buzzati’s “big portrait” and a diverse selection of structural elements from Cook’s “The Sponge Building”, “Hidden City”, “Swiss Cottage Tower”, “Way Out West Berlin”, “Jaffo Tower” and the “Veg-Club”.
The idea was to dissect Cook’s visuals and Buzzati’s wording to recreate machine-meets-body motifs where such elements could somehow resonate.
Less waste, more cosmic 🪐
